Story Mountain
I start formally introducing story mountain in 2nd grade and we work on it all the way up through 5th grade. I start by reading a story together and filling out one story mountain as a class.
Later on, I have students listen to one story and watch another. I give them a few pieces to place on the mountain, then they type the characters & setting as well as the climax.
We also do some work watching short films independently and identifying only the climax. My goal is by 4th and 5th grade students can read or watch a story and identify the pieces of story mountain. We will eventually use this skill to write our own plan for a story mountain that we'll use when creating a stop motion film with a figurine project completed in art class.
